Losing your dog is one of the worst feelings a dog owner can have. A GPS tracker can be the difference between a few minutes of worry and a long, stressful search. But there are two completely different technologies and very different costs, so the choice matters.

We do not quote prices and recommend calculating total cost: purchase plus subscription over a few years. Use check current price.

Who is this guide for?

  • Anyone with a dog that may run off
  • Anyone who hikes or lives near forest
  • Hunters and owners of working dogs
  • Anyone curious about their dog’s activity

How we evaluate

We do not run our own fleets of dogs and GPS units. We rely on:

  • Technology: cellular (LTE-M, 4G) or radio, GPS/GNSS quality.
  • Specifications: battery life, water resistance, weight.
  • Owner reports: especially how trackers perform outside towns, and app reliability.
  • Cost: purchase plus subscription over time.
  • Terms: subscription commitments and cancellation.

Scores are editorial judgements.

Our picks

Tractive GPS Dog 4 – best for most

Tractive is the most common tracker for family dogs. It is easy to get started with, the app is good and it has activity and health features. It works where there is mobile coverage. A subscription is required to track. In the mountains or deep in the forest without coverage, its usefulness is limited.

Weenect Dogs 2 – an alternative with a similar concept

Weenect works the same way as Tractive: GPS plus mobile network and a subscription. It is worth comparing subscription tiers, and some prefer its app. Check size and weight for your dog.

Garmin Alpha series – for hunting and mountains

Garmin Alpha and its collars use radio instead of the mobile network and therefore work regardless of coverage. The system is built for hunting dogs and demanding conditions. It is expensive and more complex than most families need.

Comparison criteria

Cellular or radio?

  • Cellular: cheaper to buy, simple app, but needs coverage and a subscription.
  • Radio: works without a mobile network, longer range, higher price and more advanced.

Coverage

Check which networks the tracker uses and what coverage looks like where you roam. That usually decides its usefulness.

Battery life

Frequent updates drain the battery. Think about how often you are prepared to charge.

Size and weight

Small dogs should not wear heavy trackers. Follow the manufacturer’s guidance on minimum dog size.

Subscription and total cost

Calculate over two to three years. A cheap purchase with an expensive subscription can cost more than a pricier unit with no fee.

Common mistakes

  • Relying on a Bluetooth tag such as an AirTag.
  • Buying without checking coverage.
  • Forgetting to charge.
  • Underestimating size: heavy trackers on small dogs.
  • Assuming GPS replaces training: recall is still most important.

Verdict

  • Best for family dogs: Tractive GPS Dog 4.
  • Good alternative: Weenect Dogs 2.
  • Best for hunting and areas without coverage: Garmin Alpha series.

FAQ

Do GPS collars work without mobile coverage?

Cellular models such as Tractive and Weenect need mobile coverage to send the position to your phone. Without coverage they only show the last known position. Garmin Alpha uses radio and works independently of the mobile network.

Do you need a subscription?

For cellular trackers, yes. The subscription covers mobile communication. Radio-based systems such as Garmin Alpha have no ongoing fee but a higher purchase price.

Are GPS collars allowed for hunting dogs?

GPS trackers are common among hunters, but hunting rules can change. Always check current rules with the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency or the Swedish Hunters’ Association.

Can I use an Apple AirTag or similar?

AirTags and similar Bluetooth tags are not intended for tracking live animals and only work near other people’s phones. They are no substitute for a real GPS tracker.

How long does the battery last?

It varies widely with mode and update frequency. Cellular trackers can last several days at low frequency but much less when updating often. Read the specifications and expect to charge often.
