When you have spent several thousand kronor on an e-bike it is tempting to skimp on accessories. That is often an expensive mistake. A cheap lock can be defeated in seconds, and a poor helmet protects less than you think.
Here we go through the accessories that actually make a difference, what to prioritise and what to leave on the shelf. If you have not bought the bike yet, start with our best e-bike guide. Prices change often – use check current price at the retailers.
Who is this guide for?
Anyone who has recently bought – or is thinking about buying – an e-bike and wonders what is essential. We mainly write for everyday commuters and for anyone who parks outdoors in town.
How we evaluate
We do not lab-test locks or helmets and we do not claim to. We rely on:
- Independent security ratings and certifications where they exist (for example helmet standards).
- Construction and materials per the manufacturer’s specifications.
- Owner reports from users, forums and specialist cycling magazines.
- Insurer requirements – a lock your insurer does not accept is not a good lock for you.
- Warranty and repairability.
Scores are editorial judgements, not measurements.
Our picks
Locks: ABUS Granit X-Plus 540 and Bordo Granit X-Plus 6500
The lock is the most important accessory. An e-bike is an attractive theft target, and professional thieves go after them.
- ABUS Granit X-Plus 540 is a heavy-duty U-lock often recommended for expensive bikes. It is heavy, but secure. Choose a size that lets you lock the frame and one wheel to a fixed object.
- ABUS Bordo Granit X-Plus 6500 is a folding lock that is easier to fasten and carry. Its security level is high for its category, but a U-lock is still harder to attack with tools.
Best strategy: combine a U-lock with a secondary lock (such as a frame lock or chain), and always lock the bike to something solid.
Helmet: Lazer Urbanize NTA
E-bikes go faster than many people realise, and some helmets are therefore certified to NTA 8776, a Dutch standard with wider coverage. The Lazer Urbanize NTA is one such helmet and also has an integrated rear light. Helmets are not legally required for adults in Sweden, but we recommend one.
Panniers: Ortlieb Back-Roller Classic
A backpack quickly gets sweaty. Panniers move the weight onto the bike. Ortlieb is known for waterproof bags that last for years and can be repaired. They are expensive, but they last – especially if you ride year-round.
Other accessories worth considering
- Lighting: check that your bike has legal lighting. Add a flashing rear light.
- Mudguards: essential in a Nordic climate if not included.
- Rack: check maximum load and compatibility with the e-bike frame and battery.
- Phone mount: handy for navigation, but choose one that handles vibration.
- Puncture-resistant tyres: a way to reduce hassle – especially if you commute.
- Winter gear: studded bicycle tyres are worth considering if you ride on icy roads.
Comparison criteria
- Locks: security class, weight, anchor point, insurance requirements.
- Helmets: certification, fit, ventilation, lighting.
- Bags: waterproofing, mounting, volume, repairability.
- Price: think lifetime cost, not just purchase price.
Common mistakes
- One cheap lock: professional thieves get through simple locks in seconds.
- Locking only the wheel: always secure the frame.
- A poorly fitted helmet: a helmet should sit snug and low on the forehead.
- No spare key: many locks require registration to order a replacement key.
- Leaving the battery on: take it with you if the bike is parked in public for a long time.
Verdict
Prioritise in this order: lock, helmet, bags, then other accessories. A good lock is an investment in keeping the bike.
- Best lock: ABUS Granit X-Plus 540 (or Bordo Granit if you want flexibility).
- Best commuter helmet: Lazer Urbanize NTA.
- Best bags: Ortlieb Back-Roller Classic.

FAQ
What is the best lock for an e-bike?
A heavy-duty U-lock or folding lock with a high security rating, combined with locking the bike to a fixed object. For more expensive bikes we recommend two different types of lock. Also check what your insurance requires.
Do you have to wear a helmet on an e-bike?
In Sweden helmets are legally required for children under 15. For adults it is not mandatory, but we recommend one because e-bikes are heavier and faster than ordinary bikes. Some helmets are designed for higher speeds.
Do I need special lighting on an e-bike?
An e-bike must have legal lighting: a white front light and a red rear light, plus reflectors. Many e-bikes have hub- or battery-powered lights connected to the main battery. Consider adding an extra flashing rear light.
How do I wash an e-bike without damaging the electrics?
Remove the battery, use low water pressure and avoid spraying directly at the motor and connectors. Never use a pressure washer. Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.
