The child car seat is one of the most important safety products you will buy. That is why this is a guide where we are extra clear about what we do not do: we do not crash-test seats and do not claim to know which is safest in a real accident. We help you understand the differences, ask the right questions and point you to independent tests.

We do not quote prices. Use check current price.

Who is this guide for?

  • Expectant and new parents
  • Anyone moving from an infant carrier to the next stage
  • Anyone considering a rear-facing seat

How we evaluate

Safety cannot be judged without crash testing, and we do not do that. Our approach:

  • Standards: we assume the seat meets the current approval (R44 or R129 / i-Size).
  • Independent tests: we refer to Swedish and European tests, for example the Plus Test, and urge you to read them yourself – we do not reproduce results we cannot vouch for.
  • Construction: rear-facing period, height and weight limits, installation method.
  • Ease of use: incorrect installation is one of the most common reasons seats do not protect as intended.
  • Car compatibility: we urge you always to check.
  • Owner reports on comfort and handling.

Scores are editorial assessments of usability and choice, not a safety ranking.

Our picks

Axkid Move – for long rear-facing travel

Axkid is a Swedish brand that builds seats around rear-facing travel. The Move is a seat in that vein and suits you if you want to keep your child rear-facing for a long time. It is large and heavy, so check that it fits in your car. Also check which version is current.

BeSafe iZi Modular i-Size – complete system

BeSafe is a Norwegian brand with long experience. The iZi Modular combines an infant carrier and base in a system that can be expanded. Total cost can get high if you buy several parts.

Britax Römer Dualfix 5Z – easy to use

A rotating seat makes it easier to lift the child in and out. It is a practical everyday solution. Do check how long the seat can be used rear-facing.

Cybex Sirona – rotating premium seat

The Sirona is a rotating i-Size seat with good features. It is large and needs car space. Check the version and how long your child can travel rear-facing.

Comparison criteria

Rear-facing period

The most important criterion. Longer is better. Check the seat’s maximum height and weight rear-facing.

Standard

i-Size (R129) is newer and more demanding than R44. Both are approved, but R129 has more modern requirements.

Installation

Isofix, belt and support leg. Incorrect installation is common. Read the manual and ask for help in a shop.

Car compatibility

Not all seats fit all cars. Check the manufacturer’s list and try the seat in the car.

Ease of use

Rotating functions help. But more parts mean more things that can go wrong.

Common mistakes

  • Turning the child forward-facing too early.
  • Buying without trying it in the car.
  • Incorrect installation: check tension, firmness and correct belt routing.
  • Buying second-hand without knowing the history.
  • Thick jackets in the seat: they can make the harness too loose. Take the jacket off and put it over the child.

Verdict

There is no best seat for everyone. These recommendations are choices based on use, not a safety ranking.

  • For longest rear-facing: Axkid Move.
  • For a complete system from birth: BeSafe iZi Modular i-Size.
  • For easy handling: Britax Römer Dualfix 5Z.
  • For rotating premium: Cybex Sirona.

FAQ

How long should a child travel rear-facing?

In Sweden rear-facing travel is recommended for as long as possible, ideally to around four years of age or longer if the seat and child allow. Rear-facing protects the neck, head and spine better in a frontal crash. Follow the seat’s height and weight limits.

What does i-Size (R129) mean?

i-Size is a newer European standard (R129) that, among other things, requires rear-facing travel up to at least 15 months, sizes by height instead of weight and includes side-impact testing. The older R44 standard still applies to some seats.

Does the car matter when choosing a seat?

Yes. The seat must fit your car. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility list and ideally try the seat in the car before buying. The car’s manual states which seats are suitable and whether the airbag must be switched off.

Can I buy a used car seat?

We normally advise against it, since you cannot know whether the seat has been in a crash or damaged. If you still consider it, you should know the seller, know the seat’s history and check that all parts and the manual are present. Preferably buy new.

What is the legal requirement in Sweden?

Children should normally use an approved child restraint until they are about 135 cm tall. Rules can change – always check current rules with the Swedish Transport Agency or the Swedish Transport Administration.
